BOX CANYON - Ouray, CO
Location: Box Canyon in Ouray, CO
Distance: You can enjoy Box Canyon on the High Bridge Trail (0.5 miles round trip) and The Falls Trail (short walk). If you’re looking for something longer, you can continue going on the Perimeter Trail from the High Bridge Trail.
Notes: You can capture stunning views on a 200’ high bridge. Be cautious if you’re scared of heights. If you park at the Box Canyon Falls Park & Nature Center, there is a charge to enter.
Dogs: Dogs are not allowed in the park. They are allowed on the High Bridge Trail. My dog was afraid to walk over the High Bridge so I carried him.
Parking
You can walk from town to Box Canyon or drive. To access the parking lot of the Box Canyon Falls Park and Nature Center, you’ll drive south on Main Street where it turns into the start of the Million Dollar Highway. Shortly after, take the first right on Camp Bird Road. Stay right at the split, then follow the Box Canon Road to the parking area.
The Trail
I’ve always passed through Box Canyon on my Perimeter Trail hike. I have yet to view the falls from below. I hear there can be a large crowd so it’s best to come in the morning before people are out and about. I’ve never had a large trail from the High Bridge Trail. Once you pass over the bridge, you go through a rock tunnel which is really cool. On the other side, there is a long flight of stairs with expansive views.
